Kardinal Offishall

Jason Drew Harrow, known to the world as Kardinal Offishall, was born on May 11, 1976, in Toronto, Ontario. He emerged from the vibrant underground hip-hop scene of the mid-1990s, where he initially formed the hip-hop group the Circle. His debut studio album, Eye & I, was released in 1997, followed by the independent EP Husslin' in 2000. Kardinal's career took a significant turn when he signed with MCA Records in 2000, leading to the release of his major label debut, Quest for Fire: Firestarter, Vol. 1, in 2001. This album marked his first entries on the Canadian Singles Chart with tracks like 'Ol' Time Killin'' and 'BaKardi Slang', the latter of which popularized the nickname 'T-dot' for Toronto.

Despite the promise of his early work, Kardinal faced challenges with his subsequent releases. His third album, Fire and Glory, released in 2003 under Virgin Records, received critical acclaim but struggled commercially. In 2007, he signed with Akon's KonLive Distribution, an imprint of Geffen Records, which led to the release of his fourth album, Not 4 Sale, in 2008. The lead single, 'Dangerous' featuring Akon, became a massive hit, peaking at number two on the Canadian Hot 100 and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning quadruple platinum certification in Canada.

Following the success of Not 4 Sale, Kardinal continued to make waves in the music industry with his collaborations, including a guest appearance on Akon's single 'Beautiful'. His independent journey resumed after parting ways with KonLive, during which he established the record label Black Stone Colleagues. In 2013, he took on a significant role as the creative executive director of Universal Music Canada's A&R division, showcasing his influence in the industry.

In 2015, he released his fifth album, Kardi Gras, Vol. 1: The Clash, which achieved moderate success. His contributions to music were further recognized in April 2021 when he was promoted to senior vice-president of A&R for Universal Music Canada. Throughout his career, Kardinal Offishall has been celebrated as Canada's 'hip-hop ambassador', known for his unique blend of reggae and dancehall influences within hip-hop.
