Karen Armstrong

Karen Armstrong, born on November 14, 1944, is a distinguished British theologian, writer, and historian of religion. Her journey began in the confines of a Roman Catholic convent, where she embraced a conservative faith. However, her spiritual evolution led her to adopt a more liberal and mystical approach to Christianity, reflecting her deepening understanding of the world's major religions.

Armstrong's academic pursuits took her to St Anne's College, Oxford, where she graduated with a degree in English while still in the convent. In 1969, she made the pivotal decision to leave the convent, embarking on a path that would see her become a prominent commentator on comparative religion.

Throughout her career, Armstrong has focused on the shared values among the world's religions, emphasizing the significance of compassion and the Golden Rule. Her insightful writings have garnered widespread acclaim, making her a respected voice in interfaith dialogue.

In February 2008, she was awarded the TED Prize, a recognition that came with a generous sum of one hundred thousand dollars. Armstrong utilized this platform to advocate for the establishment of a Charter for Compassion, a vision that was realized the following year, further solidifying her commitment to promoting understanding and empathy across different faiths.
