Karen Wetterhahn

Karen Elizabeth Wetterhahn, born on October 16, 1948, was a distinguished American chemist and professor at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Renowned for her expertise in toxic metal exposure, she dedicated her career to understanding the effects of hazardous substances on human health.

Tragically, Wetterhahn's life was cut short on June 8, 1997, when she succumbed to mercury poisoning at the age of forty-eight. This unfortunate incident was the result of accidental exposure to dimethylmercury, an extremely toxic organic mercury compound. Despite the use of protective gloves, the safety measures in place at the time proved inadequate, allowing just one or two drops of the substance to penetrate and ultimately lead to her untimely death.
