Karim Massimov, born on June fifteenth, nineteen sixty-five, is a prominent Kazakh politician and economist known for his significant contributions to Kazakhstan's political landscape. He first rose to prominence as the head of the Ministry of Labour in nineteen ninety-one and later served as Minister of Transport in two thousand. His political career advanced rapidly, leading him to the role of Deputy Prime Minister in two thousand one and again in two thousand six.

Massimov was appointed Prime Minister of Kazakhstan by President Nursultan Nazarbayev in January two thousand seven, a period marked by the challenges of the Great Recession. Under his leadership, Kazakhstan experienced substantial economic reforms that nearly doubled the country's GDP per capita and initiated the Unified National Healthcare System. After his initial term as Prime Minister ended in September two thousand twelve, he transitioned to the role of chief of staff of the presidential office.

In April two thousand fourteen, Massimov was reappointed as Prime Minister, where he faced further economic challenges, including a twenty percent devaluation of the Kazakhstani tenge and declining oil prices. He also spearheaded the ambitious one hundred Concrete Steps modernization plan aimed at transforming the nation’s economy.

In September two thousand sixteen, he took on the role of chairman of the National Security Committee, a position he held until his dismissal in January two thousand twenty-two following civil unrest. Subsequently, he was detained on suspicion of treason and was convicted in April two thousand twenty-four, receiving an eighteen-year prison sentence for high treason and attempted coup d'état. In November two thousand twenty-three, a second criminal case was initiated against him for money laundering and large-scale bribery.
