Karl Mai

Karl Mai, born on July 27, 1928, in Fürth, was a distinguished German footballer who made his mark as a midfielder. His career is most notably highlighted by his participation in the West Germany national team that triumphed in the 1954 FIFA World Cup. Over the course of his international career, Mai earned twenty-one caps and netted one goal, showcasing his skills on the global stage.

During his club career, Mai played for SpVgg Fürth and Bayern Munich, where he developed a reputation for his solid playing style. Renowned coach Sepp Herberger drew comparisons between Mai and the legendary Andreas Kupfer, praising his reliability and straightforward approach to the game. In the pivotal 1954 World Cup Final, Mai faced the formidable Sandor Kocsis, who had scored an impressive eleven goals leading up to the match. Mai's disciplined marking effectively neutralized Kocsis, preventing him from scoring in the final.

Beyond his playing days, Mai transitioned into coaching in the 1960s and later took on the role of a school trainer, imparting his knowledge and passion for football to younger generations. Known for his outspoken nature, he was not afraid to voice his opinions, even towards Herberger, reflecting his strong character both on and off the pitch.

In the early 1990s, Mai faced significant health challenges, including the removal of his right lung. Despite these struggles, he remained a respected figure in the football community until his passing on March 15, 1993.
