Kartir

Kartir was a prominent Zoroastrian priest whose influence spanned the reigns of four Sasanian kings during the third century. His legacy is etched in the historical inscriptions of Shapur I, as well as in the Res Gestae Divi Saporis and the Paikuli inscription of Narseh. These records highlight his significant role in the religious and political landscape of the time.

Throughout the reigns of Shapur I, Hormizd I, Bahram I, and Bahram II, Kartir's rise to power was marked by his unwavering dedication to the Zoroastrian faith. His inscriptions, created in what is now the Fars province, narrate his journey and the pivotal moments that defined his career as a priest.

During the brief reign of Bahram II's successor, Bahram III, Kartir aligned himself with the nobles who supported Narseh's rebellion. This uprising ultimately led to Narseh's ascension to the throne, showcasing Kartir's strategic involvement in the shifting dynamics of power.

However, as Narseh took the throne, Kartir's prominence began to wane, and he gradually faded into obscurity. Despite this decline, his earlier contributions to Zoroastrianism and the Sasanian Empire remain a testament to his influential role in history.
