Kat Bjelland

Kat Bjelland, born on December ninth, nineteen sixty-three, is an influential American musician best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the alternative rock band Babes in Toyland. Formed in nineteen eighty-seven, the band quickly gained recognition for its unique sound, characterized by Bjelland's distinctive vocal style that alternated between shrill screams, whispering, and speaking in tongues, alongside her jagged guitar tones infused with psychotic rockabilly rhythms.

Raised in Woodburn, Oregon, Bjelland discovered her passion for music as a teenager, learning to play guitar from her uncle. After graduating high school, she performed in her uncle's band before dropping out of the University of Oregon at nineteen. This pivotal decision led her to Portland, where she immersed herself in the vibrant punk rock scene and formed the band Pagan Babies, fostering friendships with notable figures like Courtney Love.

Following the disbandment of Pagan Babies in nineteen eighty-five, Bjelland moved to Minneapolis, where she teamed up with drummer Lori Barbero to create Babes in Toyland. The band's debut album, Spanking Machine, was released in nineteen ninety, followed by their critically acclaimed second album, Fontanelle, in nineteen ninety-two. Their third studio album, Nemesisters, came out in nineteen ninety-five, solidifying their place in the alternative rock landscape.

After Babes in Toyland disbanded in two thousand one, Bjelland explored new musical avenues with her project Katastrophy Wife, releasing the albums Amusia in two thousand one and All Kneel in two thousand four. Despite stepping back from the public eye for several years, she bravely revealed her diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder in two thousand seven. In two thousand fifteen, she reunited with Babes in Toyland, embarking on an international tour for the first time in over a decade, before ultimately retiring in two thousand seventeen.
