Kate Carmack

Kate Carmack, born in 1862, is a notable figure in the history of gold mining, particularly for her pivotal role in the Klondike Gold Rush. While her husband, George Carmack, along with her nephew Kaa Goox and Keish, ventured into the wilderness in search of fortune, Kate remained at the family fish camp located at the mouth of the Klondike River.

In August of 1896, a significant encounter took place at the fish camp when Kate met prospector William Douglas Johns. During this visit, he requested that she craft a pair of moose hide mittens. Demonstrating her skill and dedication, Kate agreed to the task and spent the entire night cutting and stitching the mittens.

The transaction that followed was memorable; in exchange for her craftsmanship, Johns offered Kate a large black silk handkerchief. This exchange not only delighted Kate but also highlighted her resourcefulness and the unique interactions that characterized life during the gold rush era.
