Katharine Carl

Katharine Carl, born in 1865, was a distinguished American portrait painter and author known for her remarkable ability to capture the essence of notable figures across the globe.

Her artistic journey took her to various corners of the world, including a significant nine-month stay in China in nineteen hundred and three. During this time, she had the unique opportunity to paint a portrait of the Empress Dowager Cixi, a project commissioned for the St. Louis Exposition.

Upon her return to the United States, Katharine shared her experiences through her writing, publishing a book titled 'With the Empress Dowager of China,' which provided insights into her time spent with one of history's most influential women.
