Katherine Johnson

Katherine Johnson, born on August twenty-six, nineteen eighteen, was a pioneering American mathematician and computer scientist whose remarkable calculations of orbital mechanics were vital to the success of NASA's early crewed spaceflights. Over her thirty-three-year career at NASA and its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, she became renowned for her mastery of complex manual calculations and played a crucial role in the transition to computer-assisted tasks.

Her groundbreaking work encompassed calculating trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for Project Mercury missions, including those for astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn. Johnson's expertise also extended to the Apollo Lunar Module and command module rendezvous paths for lunar missions, as well as contributing to the foundational stages of the Space Shuttle program and plans for a human mission to Mars.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Johnson received numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Barack Obama in two thousand fifteen. She was also honored with the Silver Snoopy Award and a NASA Group Achievement Award in two thousand sixteen. Her inspiring story was brought to life in the film Hidden Figures, where she was portrayed by Taraji P. Henson.

In two thousand nineteen, the United States Congress awarded her the Congressional Gold Medal, and in two thousand twenty-one, she was posthumously inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, solidifying her legacy as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist.
