Kathy Bates, born on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, is a celebrated American actress whose career spans over five decades. She began her journey in the arts by studying theater at Southern Methodist University before moving to New York City to pursue acting. Her early career included minor stage roles, leading to her first on-screen appearance in the film Taking Off in 1971. Bates made her mark in the theater world with her Off-Broadway role in the play Vanities in 1976.

Her talent was recognized with a Tony Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her performance in Marsha Norman's 'night, Mother in 1983, and she won an Obie Award for her role in Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune in 1988.
