Kathy Hochul, born on August twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-eight, in Buffalo, New York, is a distinguished American politician and lawyer. She made history by becoming the first female governor of New York, taking office on August twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-one, following the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
A member of the Democratic Party, Hochul's political journey began after she graduated from Syracuse University in nineteen eighty and earned her Juris Doctor from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in nineteen eighty-four. Her early career included serving on the Hamburg Town Board and as deputy Erie County clerk, leading to her appointment as Erie County clerk in two thousand seven, where she was subsequently elected to a full term and reelected in two thousand ten.
In May twenty eleven, Hochul achieved a significant milestone by winning a special election for New York's twenty-sixth congressional district, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district in forty years. She served as a U.S. representative until twenty thirteen, when she was narrowly defeated for reelection by Chris Collins after redistricting.
Hochul's political ascent continued when she was selected as Governor Andrew Cuomo's running mate in the twenty fourteen New York gubernatorial election. After their victory, she was inaugurated as lieutenant governor and was reelected alongside Cuomo in twenty eighteen. In the twenty twenty-two election, Hochul secured a full term as governor, triumphing over Republican U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin in the narrowest gubernatorial election in New York since nineteen ninety-four.
