Kató Lomb

Kató Lomb, born on February eighth, nineteen oh nine, was a remarkable Hungarian linguist, translator, and writer, renowned for her pioneering work as one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world. Initially educated in the fields of chemistry and physics, her passion for languages soon took precedence, leading her to become a polyglot fluent in nine or ten languages.

Her linguistic prowess was not just limited to her native Hungarian; she could interpret in four languages without preparation and translated technical literature while enjoying belles-lettres in six languages. Additionally, she had a keen understanding of journalism in eleven other languages, showcasing her extensive knowledge and dedication to self-study.

Throughout her illustrious career, Lomb worked professionally with sixteen languages, including Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, and Ukrainian. Her love for languages was not merely a profession but a lifelong study, which she eloquently documented in her writings, conversations, and interviews.

As an interpreter, Lomb traveled to forty countries across five continents, enriching her experiences and insights, which she shared in her book, 'Egy tolmács a világ körül' (An Interpreter Around the World).
