Kazimieras Būga

Kazimieras Būga, born on November sixth, eighteen seventy-nine, was a prominent Lithuanian linguist and philologist whose contributions significantly shaped the study of the Lithuanian language. He hailed from Pažiegė, near Dusetos, which was then part of the Russian Empire. His academic journey began when he was appointed as the personal secretary to the esteemed linguist Kazimieras Jaunius, igniting his passion for linguistics.

Between the years nineteen oh five and nineteen twelve, Būga pursued his studies at Saint Petersburg State University, where he delved into Indo-European languages under the mentorship of Jan Niecisław Baudouin de Courtenay. His quest for knowledge led him to Königsberg, where he continued his education under the guidance of Adalbert Bezzenberger, culminating in a master's degree in linguistics in nineteen fourteen.

Būga's research was groundbreaking, particularly in the realm of Lithuanian personal names, which naturally extended to the study of place-names. His investigations revealed that the ancestral homeland of the Lithuanians and other Baltic peoples was situated just north of Ukraine, around the Pripyat River, during the sixth to ninth centuries CE. Furthermore, he meticulously analyzed the chronological sequence of Slavic loanwords within the Baltic languages.

One of his notable achievements was the linguistic reconstruction of the names of the early princes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where he successfully challenged the prevailing theories regarding their Slavic origins. This pivotal work laid the foundation for the Academic Dictionary of Lithuanian (Didysis Lietuvių Kalbos Žodynas), a monumental contribution to the field. Kazimieras Būga passed away in Königsberg and was laid to rest at Petrašiūnai Cemetery in Kaunas.
