Kea Bouman

Kea Bouman, born on November twenty-third, nineteen oh three, in Almelo, Netherlands, was a remarkable athlete who made her mark in tennis, field hockey, and golf. She is celebrated as the first and only Dutch woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, achieving this historic feat at the 1927 French Championships by defeating Irene Bowder Peacock from South Africa in the final.

In addition to her Grand Slam success, Bouman dominated the Dutch national tennis scene, clinching the singles title at the national championships for four consecutive years from nineteen twenty-three to nineteen twenty-six. Her prowess on the court extended to the international stage, where she earned a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, making her the first female Dutch athlete to achieve an Olympic medal in any sport.

Her achievements did not stop at tennis; Bouman also excelled in golf, becoming the Dutch national champion, and represented her country in field hockey. In October nineteen twenty-seven, she triumphed at the inaugural Pacific Southwest Tennis Championship, defeating Molla Mallory in a thrilling three-set final. Bouman further showcased her talent by winning the women's doubles title at the French Championships in nineteen twenty-nine alongside Spain's Lilí Álvarez.

In her personal life, Bouman married Ir. Wilhelm Tiedemann on January twenty-seventh, nineteen thirty-one, in Almelo. The couple soon emigrated to the Dutch East Indies, where they lived for nine years, and later spent time in the United States. Bouman's life came to a close in Delden, Netherlands, just four days after the passing of her doubles partner, Henk Timmer.
