Warren Kenneth Paxton Jr., born on December 23, 1962, is a prominent American lawyer and politician who has held the position of Texas Attorney General since 2015. A staunch member of the Republican Party, Paxton's political career includes serving in the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives, where he represented the eighth district. His rise to prominence began with his election as attorney general in 2014, bolstered by his alignment with the Tea Party movement, and he successfully secured re-election in 2018 and 2022.
Throughout his career, Paxton has been recognized as a fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump, often described as an ultraconservative or far-right figure. Following the 2020 presidential election, he played a significant role in Trump's attempts to contest the results, notably filing the Texas v. Pennsylvania case in the U.S. Supreme Court. He also participated in the rally on January 6, 2021, which preceded the Capitol attack, and has since pursued legal actions against the Biden administration over one hundred times.
In 2015, Paxton faced serious legal challenges when he was indicted on state securities fraud charges related to actions taken before his tenure as attorney general. He maintained his innocence and, after fulfilling a pretrial agreement, the charges were ultimately dismissed in 2025. However, in October 2020, allegations of bribery and abuse of office emerged from several high-ranking aides in his office, leading to his impeachment by the Texas House of Representatives in May 2023.
The impeachment articles accused Paxton of providing preferential treatment to a political donor, misusing public resources, and making false statements. Despite these serious allegations, the Texas Senate acquitted him of all charges in September 2023, allowing him to return to office. In 2023, federal prosecutors began a separate investigation into similar issues, but by 2025, the Department of Justice opted not to pursue any charges against him. Looking ahead, Paxton announced his candidacy for the United States Senate in the upcoming 2026 election, challenging incumbent John Cornyn in the Republican primary.
