Kenan Evren

Kenan Evren, born on July 17, 1917, was a prominent Turkish military officer who rose to significant political power as the seventh president of Turkey, serving from 1982 to 1989. His ascent to the presidency was marked by his leadership of the military coup in 1980, which dramatically altered the course of Turkish politics.

Evren's tenure was characterized by a strict military regime that sought to stabilize the country amidst political turmoil. However, his actions led to severe consequences, including the deposition of Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel, the dissolution of the parliament and senate, and the suspension of the constitution. These actions were later deemed as obstructing democracy.

In a significant turn of events, on June 18, 2014, a Turkish court sentenced Evren to life imprisonment, demoting him from his rank of army general to private. This sentence was a culmination of his controversial legacy and was under appeal at the time of his death.
