Kenneth D. Taylor

Kenneth D. Taylor, born on October fifth, nineteen thirty-four, was a distinguished Canadian diplomat, educator, and businessman. He is most renowned for his pivotal role in the covert operation known as the 'Canadian Caper' during the tumultuous Iran hostage crisis of nineteen seventy-nine. As the Canadian ambassador to Iran, Taylor played a crucial part in facilitating the escape of six American diplomats who were trapped in the country.

In collaboration with the American Central Intelligence Agency, Taylor devised a clever plan to help the Americans evade capture by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. By procuring Canadian passports, he enabled them to pose as a Canadian film crew scouting locations. This daring operation required immense courage and resourcefulness, as the six Americans spent several weeks hiding in the homes of Taylor and fellow diplomat John Sheardown.

Taylor's remarkable efforts were later dramatized in the Canadian television film 'Escape from Iran: The Canadian Caper,' where he was portrayed by Gordon Pinsent. The American film 'Argo,' released in two thousand twelve, shifted the focus to the CIA and Hollywood's involvement, with Taylor being depicted by Canadian actor Victor Garber.

Following his passing, The Washington Post hailed Taylor as the 'main hero' of the Iran hostage escape, emphasizing his orchestration of the entire process. Former President Jimmy Carter echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Taylor's significant contributions. In recognition of his bravery, Taylor was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Ronald Reagan in nineteen eighty-one, although his role was somewhat downplayed in the film 'Argo.'
