Kenneth MacAlpin

Kenneth MacAlpin, also known as Kenneth I, was a pivotal figure in the formation of Scotland, reigning as King of Dál Riada from eight hundred forty-one to eight hundred fifty and later as King of the Picts from eight hundred forty-eight to eight hundred fifty-eight. He is believed to have been of Gaelic origin and inherited the throne from his father, Alpín mac Echdach, the founder of the Alpínid dynasty.

His reign marked a significant turning point in Scottish history, as he successfully conquered the Pictish kingdom between eight hundred forty-three and eight hundred fifty. This conquest initiated a campaign to unify Scotland under his rule, leading to his posthumous title, An Ferbasach, meaning 'The Conqueror.' Kenneth I's military endeavors also included battles against the Britons of the Kingdom of Strathclyde and the Viking invaders from Scandinavia.

Forteviot emerged as the capital of his kingdom during his reign, where he relocated important relics, including the revered Stone of Scone, from the abandoned abbey on Iona to solidify his authority. Although Kenneth I is often regarded as the founder of Scotland, known as Alba in Gaelic, it was his successor, Donald II, who first held the title of King of Alba, as documented in the Annals of Ulster and the Chronicon Scotorum.

Additionally, one chronicle refers to Kenneth as the first Scottish lawgiver, although specific details regarding the laws he enacted remain elusive. His legacy continues to resonate in Scottish history, symbolizing the unification of diverse tribes under a singular rule.
