Kenneth Oppel

Kenneth Oppel, a celebrated Canadian writer, was born on August thirty-first, nineteen sixty-seven, in Port Alberni, British Columbia. His formative years were spent in Victoria and Halifax, where he developed a passion for storytelling. His literary journey began in 1985 with the publication of his first book, Colin's Fantastic Video Adventure, written while he was a student at St. Michaels University School. This early work caught the attention of a family friend connected to the renowned author Roald Dahl, leading to its recommendation to an agent.

After completing his education, Oppel earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in cinema studies and English from Trinity College at the University of Toronto. During his final year, he penned The Live-Forever Machine, marking the beginning of a prolific writing career. His time in England was particularly fruitful, as he wrote several books while working as a typist for students' papers. From nineteen ninety-five to nineteen ninety-six, he served as an editor at Quill & Quire, a prominent trade magazine in the Canadian publishing industry.

Oppel is best known for his engaging children's literature, including the acclaimed Silverwing series, which features Silverwing, Sunwing, Firewing, and Darkwing. He also created the Matt Cruse saga, comprising Airborn, Skybreaker, and Starclimber, as well as the Overthrow series, which includes Bloom, Hatch, and Thrive. His contributions to literature have earned him numerous accolades, such as the prestigious Governor General's Literary Award in two thousand four for English language children's literature and a Printz Honor Award from the American Library Association for Airborn.

In his personal life, Kenneth Oppel is married to Philippa Sheppard, a Shakespeare scholar and instructor at the University of Toronto. Together, they share a love for literature and education, further enriching the literary landscape of Canada.
