Four years later, he returned to the Olympic stage in Tokyo, securing a gold medal in the same event. At the time of his first Olympic appearance, he was an undergraduate at Stanford University, graduating in nineteen sixty-one.

Mitchell's rowing career was marked by significant accomplishments, including coxing Stanford to two national championships in nineteen sixty-one and nineteen sixty-two. His exceptional talent and leadership on the water have placed him among an elite group of American coxswains, as only two others have coxed two crews to Olympic medals.

After completing his law degree at the UC Berkeley School of Law in nineteen sixty-five, Mitchell transitioned to a successful legal career in Palo Alto, California.
