Kent Monkman

Kent Monkman, born in nineteen sixty-five, is a prominent Cree First Nations artist and filmmaker, known for his innovative approach to art that challenges historical narratives. A citizen of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba's Interlake Region, Monkman has established himself as a significant figure in contemporary art, living and working between Toronto and New York City.

Monkman's artistic practice spans various mediums, including painting, film, video art, performance art, and installation art. He is particularly recognized for his vibrant and intricate works that blend traditional genre conventions with contemporary themes. In the early two thousands, he introduced his two-spirit alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, which has become a central figure in his artistic expression.

Throughout his career, Monkman has held numerous solo exhibitions at prestigious museums and galleries across Canada, the United States, and Europe. His work has garnered international acclaim, reflecting a unique perspective that reinterprets and recasts historical narratives through a modern lens.
