He made his mark as a two-time Olympic medalist, first securing a silver medal in the 470 class at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics alongside his sailing partner, Morgan Reeser.

Burnham's unwavering dedication to his sport was evident as he competed in the Olympic Trials in nineteen ninety-two, nineteen ninety-six, and two thousand four. His perseverance paid off when he clinched the coveted gold medal in the 470 class at the two thousand four Athens Olympics, making him the oldest gold medalist at those Games.

In addition to his Olympic success, Burnham was an eleven-time U.S. champion across various sailing classes. His expertise extended beyond competition; he served as a sailing coach for numerous international teams. Notably, he held the position of Head International 420 Coach for LIMA, the Long Island Mid Atlantic Sailing Team, from September two thousand fifteen until March two thousand seventeen.
