The son of former NBA player Stan Love, Kevin was a standout athlete at Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, where he gained national attention as a top-ranked prospect. He played one season of college basketball for the UCLA Bruins, leading them to a Final Four appearance in the two thousand eight NCAA tournament. His exceptional performance earned him consensus First Team All-American honors and the title of player of the year in the Pac-10 Conference, now known as the Pac-12. Choosing to forgo his remaining college eligibility, Love entered the 2008 NBA draft, where he was selected fifth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on draft night.

During his time with the Timberwolves, Love made history in the 2010–11 season by establishing the longest streak of consecutive games recording double figures in both points and rebounds since the merger of the ABA and NBA.
