Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, born on April 14, 1965, is a Kuwaiti-born Pakistani militant known for his pivotal role in global terrorism. He served as the head of propaganda for al-Qaeda and has been identified as the principal architect of the September 11 attacks, as detailed in the 2004 9/11 Commission Report. His involvement in terrorism extends beyond 9/11, including participation in the planning of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 2002 Bali bombings, and the attempted shoe bombing by Richard Reid.

Captured on March 1, 2003, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Mohammed was apprehended through a joint operation by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. Following his capture, he was subjected to interrogation and torture at various secret CIA sites, including locations in Afghanistan and Poland. By December 2006, he was transferred to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, where he remains under terrorism-related charges.

In February 2008, Mohammed faced war crimes and murder charges in a U.S. military commission, with potential penalties including the death sentence. However, the legitimacy of the proceedings has been challenged, particularly due to confessions obtained under torture. A 2008 Supreme Court ruling raised questions about the admissibility of such confessions in court.

His trial has faced numerous delays, initially set for January 11, 2021, and postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After restarting in September 2021, it was again delayed amid ongoing plea deal negotiations. In July 2024, he agreed to a plea deal for a life sentence, which was subsequently revoked by the Secretary of Defense. A D.C. appeals court later voided the plea deal in July 2025, leaving his legal future uncertain.
