Khaydhar ibn Kawus al-Afshin

Ḥaydar ibn Kāwūs al-Afshin, a distinguished military officer of Sogdian descent, served as a senior general at the court of the Abbasid caliphs. His legacy is marked by his significant contributions to the military campaigns under Caliph al-Mu'tasim, where he showcased his strategic prowess and leadership skills.

One of al-Afshin's notable achievements was his role in quelling the rebellion led by Babak Khorramdin, a task that underscored his loyalty to the Abbasid regime. Additionally, he gained recognition for his decisive victory over the Byzantine emperor Theophilos during the Amorium campaign, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable military leader.

Despite his accomplishments, al-Afshin's career took a tragic turn when he became the subject of suspicion regarding his loyalty. This led to his arrest, trial, and eventual execution in June of the year eight hundred forty-one, marking a somber end to a life dedicated to military service.
