Ki no Tsurayuki

Ki no Tsurayuki, born in the year eight hundred sixty-six, was a distinguished Japanese author and poet during the Heian period. Renowned for his contributions to literature, he is celebrated as the principal compiler of the Kokin Wakashū, a pivotal anthology of waka poetry. His literary prowess extended beyond compilation; he also crafted the Japanese Preface for this significant work, showcasing his deep understanding of poetic form and tradition.

In addition to his editorial achievements, Tsurayuki is often associated with the Tosa Diary, a work published anonymously, which further highlights his versatility as a writer. His poetry has earned him a revered place among the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals, a title bestowed by the esteemed Fujiwara no Kintō, and his verses are featured in the renowned Hyakunin Isshu, a classic collection of one hundred poems by one hundred poets.

Beyond his literary contributions, Ki no Tsurayuki held various governmental positions, serving as the Governor of Tosa from nine hundred thirty to nine hundred thirty-five. His administrative roles also included Vice Governor of Kaga from nine hundred seventeen to nine hundred twenty-three and Vice Governor of Mino Province during the same period. These positions not only reflect his influence in the literary world but also his significant role in the political landscape of his time.
