Dayvon Daquan Bennett, known to the world as King Von, was born on August 9, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois. He emerged from the city's South Side, where he was not only a talented rapper but also a prominent figure within the Black Disciples gang. His life experiences heavily influenced his music, particularly in the drill genre, a subcategory of hip-hop that gained significant traction in the 2010s.
King Von's storytelling ability and unique lyricism set him apart in the music industry. He gained widespread recognition with his 2018 single 'Crazy Story,' which showcased his knack for vivid narratives. His 2020 hit 'Took Her to the O' further solidified his status, achieving triple platinum certification and peaking within the top fifty of the Billboard Hot 100. These successes paved the way for his debut studio album, 'Welcome to O'Block,' which debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and also earned a platinum certification.
In 2018, King Von signed with Lil Durk's record label, Only the Family, marking a significant turning point in his career. This partnership led to the release of several successful mixtapes, including 'Grandson, Vol. 1' in 2019 and 'Levon James' in 2020, both of which further established his presence in the rap scene. His contributions to the genre were undeniable, and he played a crucial role in the growth of his label.
Tragically, King Von's life was cut short when he was fatally shot on November 6, 2020, at the age of twenty-six during an altercation in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continued to thrive with the posthumous release of 'What It Means to Be King' in 2022, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, and 'Grandson' in 2023, his final album. King Von's influence on the drill music scene and his storytelling prowess remain significant to this day.
