Kitamura Tokoku

Kitamura Tokoku, born Kitamura Montarō on December twenty-ninth, eighteen sixty-eight, was a prominent Japanese poet, writer, literary critic, and philosopher. He played a pivotal role in the emergence of the modern Japanese romantic literary movement, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape of his time.

Despite his literary achievements, Tokoku's life was marked by personal struggles. Tragically, on the morning of May sixteenth, eighteen ninety-four, he took his own life by hanging in the garden of his home near Shiba Park in Tokyo. This heartbreaking event shocked the literary community and left a lasting impact on his contemporaries.

Today, Kitamura Tokoku is remembered not only for his contributions to literature but also for the profound sadness that enveloped his life. His final resting place is at the temple of Zuisho-ji in Shirokane, Tokyo, where admirers of his work continue to pay their respects.
