Klaus Iohannis

Klaus Iohannis, born on June thirteenth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a prominent Romanian politician and physicist who made history as the first president of Romania from an ethnic minority. His journey began as a dedicated physics teacher at the Samuel von Brukenthal National College in Sibiu, where he later served as mayor from two thousand to two thousand fourteen, transforming the city into a vibrant tourist destination and earning recognition as the European Capital of Culture in two thousand seven.

In two thousand, Iohannis was elected mayor representing the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, achieving remarkable electoral success with landslide victories in subsequent elections. His political career took a significant turn when he joined the National Liberal Party in February two thousand thirteen, quickly rising to the position of party president in two thousand fourteen. That same year, he was elected president of Romania, securing a second term in two thousand nineteen.

However, Iohannis's second term was marred by allegations of democratic backsliding and a shift towards authoritarian governance, particularly following the political crisis in two thousand twenty-one. His approval ratings plummeted as public discontent grew, culminating in a survey from June two thousand twenty-three revealing that over ninety percent of Romanians did not trust him. Despite the annulment of the two thousand twenty-four presidential election, Iohannis chose to resign in February two thousand twenty-five.

As a conservative leader, Iohannis's tenure was characterized by significant challenges, including accusations of suppressing freedom of speech and press.
