Koichi Wakata

Koichi Wakata, born on August first, nineteen sixty-three, is a distinguished Japanese engineer and astronaut currently affiliated with Axiom Space. His remarkable career in spaceflight, which spanned nearly two decades, culminated in his retirement from JAXA in twenty twenty-four.

Throughout his illustrious career, Wakata logged over five hundred days in space, participating in five significant missions. His experience includes three missions aboard the Space Shuttle, one on the Soyuz, and another on the Crew Dragon. Notably, he undertook three long-duration stays on the International Space Station (ISS) and two short-duration flights, one to the ISS and one aboard the Space Shuttle.

Wakata's contributions to space exploration are particularly highlighted by his role as the first Japanese commander of the ISS during Expedition thirty-nine. His leadership and expertise have not only advanced scientific research but have also inspired future generations of astronauts and engineers.
