Konrad Zuse, born on June 22, 1910, was a pioneering figure in the realm of computer science and engineering. As a German civil engineer and inventor, he made significant contributions that would shape the future of computing. His most notable achievement, the Z3, became operational in May 1941 and is recognized as the world's first programmable computer, earning him the title of the father of the modern computer.
In addition to the Z3, Zuse developed the S2 computing machine, which is regarded as the first process control computer. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish one of the earliest computer businesses in 1941, where he produced the Z4, the first commercial computer in history. This innovative work laid the groundwork for future advancements in computing technology.
From 1943 to 1945, Zuse designed Plankalkül, the first high-level programming language, showcasing his forward-thinking approach to programming. In 1969, he further explored the concept of a computation-based universe in his influential book, Rechnender Raum (Calculating Space). Despite the challenges posed by World War II, which overshadowed his work in the United Kingdom and the United States, Zuse's contributions were eventually recognized, particularly when IBM acquired options on his patents in 1946.
Zuse's legacy extends beyond his inventions; the Z4 inspired the creation of the ERMETH, one of the first computers in Switzerland and Europe. His early work was primarily funded by his family and commercial interests, but after 1939, he received support from the Nazi German government, allowing him to continue his groundbreaking research.
