Konstantin Päts

Konstantin Päts, born on February twenty-third, eighteen seventy-four, was a pivotal figure in Estonian history, serving as the country's president from nineteen thirty-eight to nineteen forty. His political career spanned several decades, during which he became one of the most influential statesmen of the independent Republic of Estonia. Notably, he held the position of State Elder five times, a role equivalent to that of a president in Estonia's parliamentary system.

Päts's political journey began early, marked by a rivalry with Jaan Tõnisson that started in journalism with his newspaper, Teataja. His activism led to a death sentence in absentia during the Russian Revolution of nineteen oh five, prompting him to flee to Switzerland and later Finland. After returning to Estonia, he faced imprisonment under the German occupation in nineteen eighteen but emerged as a key leader in the Estonian Declaration of Independence on February twenty-fourth, nineteen eighteen.
