Konstantin Stoilov

Konstantin Stoilov, born on 23 September 1853 in Plovdiv, emerged as a prominent figure in Bulgarian politics, serving as Prime Minister on two occasions. His political journey was marked by a commitment to European ideals, earning him the distinction of being described by Simeon Radev as the most European-like of all Bulgarian politicians.

Stoilov's academic pursuits took him from Robert College in Istanbul to Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, where he earned a doctorate in law. His time in Germany also saw him become a Freemason, further shaping his worldview and political philosophy.

A member of the Conservative Party and later the founder of the People's Party, Stoilov held various significant government positions, including Foreign Minister, Law Minister, Interior Affairs Minister, and Minister of Finance. His first term as Prime Minister in 1887 was brief, but he returned to the role in 1894, leading a government that promoted tolerance towards the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization and advocated for fair treatment of the Jewish community.

Despite facing criticism from the press, particularly from his political rival Stefan Stambolov, Stoilov's administration took decisive actions against Stambolov, including the sequestering of his land and the abolition of pensions for former ministers. His coalition remained in power until 1899, after which a series of liberal governments took over. Stoilov continued to be a significant player in Bulgarian politics until his passing on 23 March 1901.
