Kosta Khetagurov

Kosta Khetagurov, born on October third, eighteen fifty-nine, in the village of Nar, emerged as a pivotal figure in Ossetian literature and culture. He is celebrated as the national poet of the Ossetian people and is often regarded as the founder of Ossetian literature. His artistic talents extended beyond poetry; he was also a skilled painter and a dedicated public benefactor.

His educational journey began at the Stavropol Gymnasium, where he studied from eighteen seventy-one to eighteen eighty-one. In eighteen eighty-one, he enrolled at the prestigious Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. However, financial constraints forced him to abandon his studies in eighteen eighty-five, leading him back to his homeland.

Upon returning to Ossetia, Khetagurov quickly gained prominence as a poet. His works, composed in the Ossetic language, resonated deeply with the local populace, spreading through towns and villages in oral tradition. He also contributed to Russian-language newspapers, including Severny Kavkaz, which he edited from eighteen ninety-three to eighteen hundred two, and Kazbek. His artistic endeavors included notable paintings, one of which depicted Saint Nino, a revered figure in Georgian Christianity, earning acclaim from the Georgian community.

Despite his literary success, Khetagurov faced significant challenges due to his outspoken criticism of the Imperial Russian government. This led to his exile from his homeland on two occasions: first from eighteen ninety-one to eighteen ninety-six, and again from eighteen ninety-nine to eighteen hundred two. The latter exile took a severe toll on his health, ultimately hindering his ability to engage in creative and social activities. Khetagurov passed away on April first, nineteen hundred six, in Labæ, now part of Karachay-Cherkessia.
