Koxinga

Koxinga, born on August twenty-eighth, sixteen twenty-four, was a formidable military commander and a prominent figure in the resistance against the Qing conquest of China during the seventeenth century. Known for his honorific title, he was a Southern Ming general who played a pivotal role in the defense of Chinese sovereignty and the expulsion of Dutch colonial forces from Taiwan.

His unique heritage, being born in Japan to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother, shaped his identity and ambitions. Koxinga's rise through the Ming court was marked by his success in the imperial examinations, eventually serving as a Guozijian scholar in Nanjing. Following the fall of Beijing to rebels in sixteen forty-four, he pledged his loyalty to the Longwu Emperor, who honored him with the royal surname Zhu in sixteen forty-five, a name he embraced throughout his life.

In recognition of his unwavering loyalty and numerous campaigns against the Qing, Koxinga was appointed the Prince of Yanping by the Yongli Emperor in sixteen fifty-five. His most notable achievement came in sixteen sixty-two when he successfully besieged Fort Zeelandia, defeating the Dutch East India Company and establishing the Kingdom of Tungning on Taiwan, a state that thrived until sixteen eighty-three.

Tragically, Koxinga's life was cut short in sixteen sixty-two, as he passed away unexpectedly while strategizing an invasion of Luzon in response to the Fourth Sangley Massacre perpetrated by Spanish colonists in the Philippines. His legacy as a rebel, pirate, and politician endures, symbolizing resistance and national pride.
