His career in the National Hockey League (NHL) spanned several teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames, Avangard Omsk, Växjö Lakers, and Nitra.
Versteeg's journey in professional hockey began when he was selected one hundred thirty-fourth overall in the two thousand four NHL entry draft by the Boston Bruins.
