Wu Yi Fan, born Li Jiaheng on November 6, 1990, is a Chinese-born Canadian artist known professionally as Kris Wu. He gained fame as a member of the South Korean–Chinese boy band Exo and its subgroup Exo-M under SM Entertainment, where he showcased his talents until his departure in 2014.
Following his exit from Exo, Kris Wu embarked on a successful solo career in mainland China, where he not only made a name for himself as a singer and rapper but also as a film actor. He starred in several box office hits, including the popular films Mr. Six and Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back. His international presence was solidified with his Hollywood debut in the action film XXX: Return of Xander Cage in 2017.
However, his career took a dramatic turn in 2021 when he faced serious allegations of rape, leading to an investigation by Chinese authorities. On November 25, 2022, a Chinese court convicted him of raping three intoxicated women, resulting in a thirteen-year prison sentence. Additionally, he was fined six hundred million yuan for tax evasion.
In November 2023, Kris Wu's appeal against the rape conviction was denied, and he is set to be deported from China upon completing his sentence. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of fame and the legal system's response to serious allegations.
