Krishna Sobti

Krishna Sobti, born on February eighteenth, nineteen twenty-five, in Gujrat, Punjab, now in Pakistan, was a prominent Indian Hindi-language fiction writer and essayist. Renowned for her unapologetic exploration of themes such as sexuality and identity, she made significant contributions to Indian literature throughout her career.

Her literary prowess was recognized with numerous accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in nineteen eighty for her celebrated novel Zindaginama. In nineteen ninety-six, she was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest distinction awarded by the Akademi. The Jnanpith Award, received in two thousand seventeen, further solidified her status as a literary giant.

Among her most notable works is the groundbreaking novel Mitro Marajani, published in nineteen sixty-six, which candidly addresses a married woman's sexuality. Sobti's literary achievements also include the first Katha Chudamani Award in nineteen ninety-nine for Lifetime Literary Achievement, the Shiromani Award in nineteen eighty-one, and the Hindi Academy Award in nineteen eighty-two. Her novel Samay Sargam was selected for the Vyas Samman in two thousand eight.

Writing under the pen name Hashmat, Sobti's diverse body of work includes novels such as Daar Se Bichchuri, Surajmukhi Andhere Ke, and Yaaron Ke Yaar, as well as short stories like Nafisa and Sikka Badal gaya. Her writings have been translated into various languages, including English and Urdu, making her stories accessible to a broader audience.

In two thousand five, her work Dil-o-Danish, translated into English as The Heart Has Its Reasons, won the Crossword Award in the Indian Language Fiction Translation category. Krishna Sobti's legacy as the grande dame of Hindi literature continues to inspire readers and writers alike.
