She made history in nineteen ninety-two by becoming the first Asian American to win a gold medal in a Winter Olympic competition, securing her place as the Olympic champion. Yamaguchi's remarkable career in women's singles also includes being a two-time World champion in nineteen ninety-one and nineteen ninety-two, as well as the U.S. champion in nineteen ninety-two.

Before her success in singles, Yamaguchi showcased her talent as a pairs skater alongside Rudy Galindo, with whom she won the World Junior championship in nineteen eighty-eight and became a two-time national champion in nineteen eighty-nine and nineteen ninety. After retiring from competitive skating in nineteen ninety-two, she transitioned to performing in shows and competing in the professional circuit, where she claimed the World Professional Figure Skating Championships title four times between nineteen ninety-two and nineteen ninety-seven.

In addition to her illustrious skating career, Yamaguchi is a published author, having written five books, including the acclaimed children's book, Dream Big, Little Pig!, which earned her the Gelett Burgess Children's Book Award and appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list.
