Kuchlug, born in the year one thousand one hundred fifty-six, emerged as a significant figure in the tumultuous history of the Mongolian steppe. A member of the Naiman tribe, he witnessed the downfall of his people at the hands of Genghis Khan, prompting his flight westward to the Western Liao dynasty, where he would eventually carve out his own legacy.
Initially serving as an advisor to Yelü Zhilugu, his future father-in-law, Kuchlug's ambitions soon led him to rebel against the established order. In a bold move, he usurped the throne, effectively ending the reign of the House of Yelü and positioning himself as the last emperor of the Western Liao dynasty, also known as Qara Khitai.
Despite his rise to power, Kuchlug's reign was marked by conflict. In the year one thousand two hundred eighteen, he met his demise at the hands of the Mongols, who absorbed the Western Liao into their expanding empire. His legacy, however, remains as he retained the dynastic title of 'Great Liao' upon his ascension, a testament to his brief yet impactful rule.
