Kurt Elling

Kurt Elling, born on November second, nineteen sixty-seven, is a distinguished American jazz singer and songwriter hailing from Chicago, Illinois. His musical journey began in his childhood, influenced by his father, who served as Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church. This early exposure to music led him to sing in choirs and explore various musical instruments, laying the foundation for his future career.

While attending Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, Elling discovered the world of jazz, which would become his passion. Although he enrolled in the University of Chicago Divinity School, he chose to leave just one credit shy of graduation to fully commit to his aspirations as a jazz vocalist. This decision marked the beginning of his professional journey in the vibrant music scene of Chicago.

Elling quickly made a name for himself, captivating audiences with his scat singing and improvisational skills. In the early nineteen nineties, he recorded a demo that caught the attention of Blue Note Records, leading to a successful recording career. Over the years, he has received seventeen Grammy Award nominations, winning the prestigious Best Vocal Jazz Album for both 'Dedicated to You' in two thousand nine and 'Secrets Are the Best Stories' in two thousand twenty-one.

Renowned for his artistry, Elling frequently tops the Down Beat magazine Critics' Poll and has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with pianist Laurence Hobgood. Together, they led a quartet that toured extensively around the globe, showcasing Elling's exceptional talent and solidifying his status as a leading figure in contemporary jazz.
