Kuzma Minin

Kuzma Minin, a prominent figure during the tumultuous Time of Troubles in Russia, was born in Balakhna and became a successful butcher in Nizhny Novgorod. His reputation as a trusted and respected merchant led to his selection by fellow guild members to manage public funds for the formation of the Second Volunteer Army, a patriotic movement aimed at liberating Russia from Polish occupation.

Under the leadership of Prince Pozharsky, the Second Volunteer Army achieved a significant victory by clearing the Moscow Kremlin of Polish forces on November 1, 1612. Minin's exceptional skills as a military commander were recognized, and he was subsequently elevated to the nobility and appointed as a member of the boyar duma under the newly elected Tsar Michael Romanov.

Minin's contributions to the Russian cause during this critical period earned him a place in the hearts of the nation, and he, along with Pozharsky, became celebrated national heroes. Their legacy is immortalized in the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, located in Moscow's Red Square.

After his death in 1616, Minin was interred in the Archangel Cathedral of Nizhny Novgorod, where his memory continues to be honored. A central square in the city bears his name, serving as a testament to his enduring impact on Russian history.
