Walker's football journey began at his boyhood club, Sheffield United, where he joined at the age of seven. He made his first-team debut at eighteen after a successful loan spell at Northampton Town. His impressive performances led him to play in the 2009 Championship play-off final, ultimately earning a move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, where he was immediately loaned back to Sheffield United.

After further loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa, Walker established himself in Tottenham's first team. He was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in the 2016–17 Premier League and the 2014–15 League Cup under the management of Mauricio Pochettino. In 2017, he made a significant move to Manchester City for a fee of forty-five million pounds, where he thrived under Pep Guardiola's guidance.

During his time at Manchester City, Walker achieved remarkable success, winning six Premier League titles, four EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League in 2023 as part of a continental treble.
