Kyrsten Sinema, born on July twelfth, nineteen seventy-six, is a prominent American politician, lawyer, and former social worker. She served as a United States senator from Arizona from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-five. Initially a member of the Democratic Party, Sinema made headlines in December two thousand twenty-two when she declared her independence.
Her political journey began with the Arizona Green Party, where she gained recognition for her progressive advocacy, particularly in support of LGBT rights and her opposition to the war on terror. In two thousand four, she transitioned to the Arizona Democratic Party and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in two thousand twelve, where she became a member of the New Democrat Coalition, the Blue Dog Coalition, and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
In two thousand eighteen, Sinema won the Senate election, succeeding retiring Senator Jeff Flake and defeating Republican nominee Martha McSally. This victory marked her as the first openly bisexual and the second openly LGBTQ woman to serve in the Senate, as well as the first woman elected to the Senate from Arizona. Notably, she was also the only religiously unaffiliated member of the Senate.
During her tenure, Sinema was recognized as a key swing vote in the Senate, particularly during the closely divided one hundred seventeenth and one hundred eighteenth Congresses. On March fifth, two thousand twenty-four, she announced her decision not to seek reelection, paving the way for Democrat Ruben Gallego to succeed her.
