Lady Godiva

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Lady Godiva

Lady Godiva, known in Old English as Godgifu, was a prominent Anglo-Saxon noblewoman born around the year nine hundred ninety. She is best recognized as the wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, and played a significant role as a patron of various churches and monasteries during her lifetime.

Her legacy is largely defined by a captivating legend that has endured through the centuries. This tale, which dates back to at least the thirteenth century, recounts how she rode through the streets of Coventry in the nude, save for her flowing hair. This daring act was performed in a bid to persuade her husband to alleviate the heavy taxation he had imposed on his tenants.

The story of Lady Godiva has also given rise to the term 'Peeping Tom,' referring to a voyeur who, according to later adaptations of the legend, watched her ride and was subsequently struck blind or dead as a consequence of his actions. This narrative has cemented her place in folklore and popular culture.
