Lalleshwari, also affectionately known as Lal Ded, was a prominent Kashmiri mystic and poet born in the year 1320. She is celebrated for her profound contributions to the Kashmir Shaivism school of Hindu philosophy, where her spiritual insights and poetic expressions have left an indelible mark.
As the creator of the unique style of mystic poetry known as vatsun or Vakhs, which translates to 'speech' in Sanskrit, Lalleshwari's verses, referred to as Lal Vakhs, are among the earliest compositions in the Kashmiri language. Her work not only enriched the literary landscape of Kashmir but also played a significant role in the evolution of modern Kashmiri literature.
Known by various names such as Lalla Aarifa, Lal Diddi, and Lalla Yogishwari, Lalleshwari is often affectionately called 'Mother Lal' or 'Mother Lalla.' Her legacy continues to inspire generations, embodying the essence of mysticism and poetic expression in her homeland.
