Lamar Hunt

Lamar Hunt Sr. was a visionary American businessman and sports executive, born on August 2, 1932. His remarkable contributions to the world of sports, particularly in football, soccer, and tennis, have left an indelible mark on American culture. As the principal founder of the American Football League (AFL) and Major League Soccer (MLS), Hunt played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of professional sports in the United States.

In addition to his groundbreaking work with the AFL and MLS, Hunt was instrumental in the establishment of the North American Soccer League (NASL) and co-founded World Championship Tennis. His ownership of the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL) and the Kansas City Wizards in MLS further exemplified his commitment to promoting sports at all levels. At the time of his passing, he also owned two other MLS teams, Columbus Crew and FC Dallas.

Hunt's influence extended beyond professional sports; he was a key figure in the development of the Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun theme parks in Kansas City. His legacy in soccer is honored through the U.S. Open Cup, the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in the United States, which bears his name.

His accolades include induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in nineteen seventy-two, the National Soccer Hall of Fame in nineteen eighty-two, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame in nineteen ninety-three. In nineteen ninety-nine, he received the Medal of Honor from the National Soccer Hall of Fame, a prestigious award given to only three individuals in history. Lamar Hunt was married for forty-two years to his second wife, Norma, and was a proud father of four children: Sharron, Lamar Jr., Daniel, and Clark Hunt.
