Lana Turner, born on February 8, 1921, in Idaho, was an iconic American actress whose career spanned nearly five decades. She rose to fame as both a pin-up model and a film star, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses in the mid-1940s. During her eighteen-year contract with MGM, her films generated approximately one billion dollars in today's currency, solidifying her status as one of the studio's biggest stars.

Turner's journey to stardom began in 1936 when she was discovered at the Top Hat malt shop in Hollywood at the tender age of fifteen. By sixteen, she had signed a personal contract with Warner Bros. director Mervyn LeRoy, who later took her to MGM. Her screen debut came in 1937 with the film They Won't Forget, where she played a murder victim, quickly transitioning into supporting roles that showcased her as an ingénue.

In the early 1940s, Turner established herself as a leading lady, starring in notable films such as Johnny Eager, Ziegfeld Girl, and Somewhere I'll Find You, often alongside Clark Gable. Her portrayal of a glamorous femme fatale in The Postman Always Rings Twice in 1946 marked a turning point, earning her critical acclaim and establishing her as a serious dramatic actress. The 1950s saw her popularity soar with performances in The Bad and the Beautiful and Peyton Place, the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Turner's personal life was often as publicized as her career, particularly following the tragic death of her lover, Johnny Stompanato, at the hands of her daughter, Cheryl Crane, in 1958. Despite the turmoil, her film Imitation of Life in 1959 became one of her greatest commercial successes. She continued to act, earning a David di Donatello Award for her role in Madame X in 1966. After a semi-retirement in the 1970s, she made a notable return to television in the series Falcon Crest in 1982, which garnered high ratings. Sadly, Turner was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1992 and passed away three years later at the age of seventy-four.
