She gained prominence as a member of the original cast of NBC's iconic sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, where she showcased her talent from nineteen seventy-five until her departure in nineteen eighty. Newman's journey into the world of comedy began during her high school years at Beverly Hills High School, where she developed a passion for improvisation.

After graduating in nineteen seventy, Newman honed her craft by studying mime with the legendary Marcel Marceau in Paris for a year. Upon returning to the United States, she became a founding member of the renowned comedy improvisational group The Groundlings. Her big break came when Lorne Michaels hired her for a Lily Tomlin TV special in nineteen seventy-four, paving the way for her role in Saturday Night Live the following year. During her time on the show, she created memorable characters such as Connie Conehead, proto-Valley girl Sherry, and Christie Christina.

In recognition of her contributions to television, Newman, along with her fellow original cast members, was honored by the Television Academy Hall of Fame in two thousand seventeen.
